  4. Levitation Illusions for Sale: 5 Styles That Stop the Show (and How to Pick Yours)

A body floating in mid-air still outsells every other illusion on a poster — no wires visible, no explanation offered. Yet most magicians who buy their first levitation illusion pick the wrong style for their stage, their crew and their audience, and a beautiful prop ends up living in its flight case instead of in the show.

Here are the five levitation styles we build most often at our Liuzhou factory, what each one demands from your venue, and roughly what each costs when you buy factory-direct.

1. Chair suspension — the touring workhorse

An assistant rises from a folding chair into a horizontal float, then passes a hoop to prove there is nothing underneath. It is the most requested levitation for cruise ships, theatres and corporate galas because it needs no rigging and no ceiling points.

  • Two performers, one flight case, fast reset between shows
  • Works on stages as small as 3 m deep
  • Factory-direct: roughly US$400–900 ex-works

2. Flying carpet — the silent float

The carpet leaves the ground with a performer standing on it and glides across the stage. Audiences read it as pure magic because there is no visible frame at any angle, including eye level.

  • Requires a level stage and controlled lighting
  • Great midpoint showstopper between big illusions
  • Factory-direct: roughly US$500–1,200 ex-works

3. Invisible chair — the human levitation

The performer simply sits down on nothing, legs crossed, metres above the floor. With no chair, no carpet and no box, it reads as the purest form of the effect — which is why street performers and TV variety shows love it.

  • Strongest photo and video moment of any style — built for social clips
  • Needs disciplined angles and a rehearsed mount
  • Factory-direct: roughly US$600–1,500 ex-works

See the invisible chair stage illusion for configuration options.

4. Suspension board and hoop levitation — the big-stage look

For theatres with real stage depth, a suspension board floats an assistant high above the deck and passes a ring over the body. It is the style audiences remember from televised gala shows, and it is the style where build quality matters most: load paths, locks and surfaces all have to survive touring.

  • Highest visual impact; needs 4–5 m of ceiling clearance
  • Three-plus crew for a fast, safe setup
  • Factory-direct: roughly US$1,000–3,000 ex-works

We engineer the locking and load systems in-house — see the suspension board levitation prop.

5. Street and outdoor levitation — the crowd builder

A performer floats cross-legged over a mat in full daylight, drawing a paying crowd out of thin air. These units are engineered for weather, transport and all-day sessions, which is a very different brief from a theatre prop.

Specs buyers forget to ask about

Whichever style you choose, put these five questions in the RFQ — they decide whether the illusion actually works in your venue:

  • Sightlines: from what angle does the method fail? Ask for the tested minimum and maximum viewing angle.
  • Stage and clearance: floor area, ceiling height and rigging points required.
  • Reset time: how many people to reset between shows, and how long it takes.
  • Transport: case count, case weight and whether parts are tool-free.
  • Load rating: maximum performer weight with a documented safety margin.

Custom is the default, not an upgrade

We are a factory, not a reseller: 18+ years designing and building large stage illusions, ISO-certified production and CCC-certified materials at our Liuzhou workshop, with sales handled by our Nanjing office. Most levitation units we ship are modified in some way — colour, height, case packing, load rating or a completely custom finish to match your show’s design language. Tell us your stage and your budget and we will tell you honestly which style fits.
